MTU Junior Kaylee Meyers Awarded Goldwater Scholarship

For the second consecutive calendar year, a Michigan Tech student has been awarded a single of the
nation’s most prestigious undergraduate exploration scholarships.

Kaylee Meyers, a 3rd-calendar year student at Michigan Technological University, has obtained
a single of the nation’s highest accolades for faculty undergraduates.
The biomedical engineering important from Essexville, Michigan is the twelfth Michigan Tech student to get the
prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

Set up in 1989 by Congress to honor the late Arizona senator and administered
by the
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education and learning Basis, Goldwater scholarships are awarded to faculty sophomores and juniors. The awards
are centered on tutorial merit, exploration expertise and intent to go after a job in
science, engineering or arithmetic.

As portion of the collection approach, colleges nominate up to 4 college students who intend
to go after a job in exploration and have at least a 3. GPA. As a single of 396 recipients
chosen from around five,000 nominees, Meyers will get a fiscal award
to be used on expenses like tuition, publications, and room and board for her senior calendar year.

Supporting to Heal

Meyers created a “passion for engineering” while involved with Very first Robotics in
high faculty. “But I also really preferred to operate in the health-related industry, so biomedical
engineering was the best combination of the two,” she said.

Meyers’ exploration focuses on engineered biomaterials. “More especially, injectable
biomaterials that could be used to speed up wound therapeutic in injured tendons,” she
said.

“Kaylee’s operate has led to novel info about how injectable biomaterials can be
used to handle cell and molecular mechanisms involved in tendon mend,” said Meyer’s
exploration advisor, Rupak Rajachar, a principal lecturer in biomedical engineering at
Michigan Tech. “These findings are the basis for a single of two to start with-creator manuscripts
she is now writing.”

Meyers’ second manuscript is made up of the results of her creative initiatives to help establish
a desk-prime ultrasound program for use in targeted drug supply from biomaterials.

Meyers’ and Rajachar’s exploration was lately awarded a second grant from the National
Institutes of Health and fitness (NIH) to operate on incorporating targeted ultrasound into the exploration
via a collaborative challenge with Michigan Tech alumnus Eli Vlaisavljevich, a past
Goldwater Scholarship receiver, member of the Engineered Biomaterials Lab community
and existing faculty at Virginia Tech.

In addition to the NIH grant and Goldwater Scholarship, Meyers’ exploration has obtained
guidance from the Portage Health and fitness Basis and the Charles Steger Global Internship
Award from the Focused Ultrasound Basis. She said these kinds of funding for undergraduate
exploration is important.

“I believe outdoors funding is crucial for the undergraduate exploration we do in the
lab, as it allows us to operate on solving really exciting engineering challenges,”
she said.

An Early Start

Meyers’ Michigan Tech journey commenced at the University’s Summer months Youth Program (SYP).
When she to start with set foot on campus in 2016, she couldn’t foresee the route she would
acquire, but she knew from the start she was at a specific position.

“The summertime soon after my junior calendar year of high faculty, I attended MTU’s Girls in Engineering
Program,” Meyers said. “I learned a whole lot about engineering and experienced a chance to discover
the campus and surrounding space.”

A self-described “avid outdoorswoman” who enjoys to hike, bicycle, ski, trail run and
kayak, she knew that Tech’s teachers and area would be a excellent in shape. A handful of months
later, she discovered that the “good fit” extended to the classroom and lab as well.

“As a senior, I attended MTU Preview Working day, where I met my exploration advisor, Dr. Rajachar,
and his Engineered Biomaterials Lab group,” she said. “Through them, I learned about
the close campus community and what undergraduate exploration was like at Tech. It bolstered
my final decision to occur below.”

Continuing a Proud Tradition

Meyers is Michigan Tech’s fourth Goldwater Scholarship receiver in the past 5
a long time and the second consecutive MTU student to be so honored. Third-calendar year organic
sciences important Tessa Steenwinkel received the scholarship final calendar year.

Meyer’s lengthy-time period objectives are to gain her PhD in biomedical engineering and ultimately
run a exploration lab of her individual as a principal investigator and university professor.

“I think Tech is incredibly excellent at promoting students from all backgrounds in STEM fields,
especially via youth outreach and our supportive campus community.”Kaylee Meyers

Rajachar said it is interesting to see the prospective broader affect Meyers can have both equally
as a graduate student and foreseeable future mentor to the subsequent generation of college students in STEM
fields.

“She recognizes that the finest gift any scientific mentor can provide is their
time and an ecosystem that empowers younger college students to think in hard operate and their
individual capacity to solve challenges,” he said.

Meyers is in spectacular enterprise as the fifth Michigan Tech biomedical engineering
important to get a Goldwater Scholarship, more than any other self-control at the University,
and the 3rd to be mentored by Rajachar.

Vlaisavljevich, who received the scholarship in 2009, is an assistant professor of biomedical
engineering at Virginia Tech and has set up a laboratory producing therapeutic
ultrasound instruments. 2012 scholarship receiver Hal Holmes is a guide engineer at Conservation
X Labs, producing slicing-edge genetic testing know-how for conservation.

Rajachar is self-assured Meyers will are living up to the high conventional set by her predecessors.
“I really think that Kaylee can satisfy or exceed the achievement of any prior student
from my lab,” he said. “I highlight their achievements as a result much as scientists not
only to express the significance of the Goldwater and the strength of my perception in
Kaylee, but more importantly to understand that each and every of them also serves as a mentor
to Kaylee, supporting her as she will work diligently towards assembly what I think is her
fantastic guarantee as a scientist and engineer.”

When the time arrives for Meyers to mentor college students of her individual, she’ll reflect on her
personalized function product. “I want to thank my exploration advisor, Dr. Rajachar, for furnishing
me and many other college students the prospect to get involved in undergraduate exploration
in an encouraging and intellectually stimulating ecosystem,” she said. “I am incredibly
privileged to have him as a mentor.”

Michigan Technological University is a public exploration university, property to more than
7,000 college students from 54 countries. Founded in 1885, the University features more than
one hundred twenty undergraduate and graduate degree systems in science and know-how, engineering,
forestry, business and economics, overall health professions, humanities, arithmetic, and
social sciences. Our campus in Michigan’s Higher Peninsula overlooks the Keweenaw Waterway
and is just a handful of miles from Lake Top-quality.
